Sustainable Pervious Parking Lot Storm Water
Collection Case Study University of California, Merced While a parking lot seems like an unlikely poster
child for sustainable building practices, UC Merced’s new lot
demonstrates an innovative approach that minimizes contamination from
stormwater runoff and greatly reduces heat island effect. Heat island effect and stormwater pollution are significant
drawbacks associated with conventional parking lots. Dark, non-reflective
surfaces, like black asphalt parking lots, trap heat and radiate it into the
surrounding area. By raising ambient temperatures, the heat island effect negatively
impacts local flora and fauna, exacerbate air pollution, and strain building
cooling systems, thus contributing to increased energy use. Stormwater runoff
from conventional, impervious parking lots requires costly and
energy-intensive treatment. By using a GEOWEB system, Mark Maxwell, Physical
Planning, Design and Construction, and designing engineer, Daniel Leary, were
able to create a parking lot that replaces black asphalt with pervious gravel
stalls. Read on… BMY Construction Supports the Central

Online Fresno Cohousing Seeks Sales
Coordinator Fresno Cohousing is nearing
completion of construction and is seeking a Sales Coordinator for the
remaining homes. This project, near the corner of Alluvial and
Chestnut, features high quality, sustainable design and construction,
photovoltaic solar on every home, and was the first multi-family project to
qualify for the City of Fresno’s “Fresno Green” incentive
program. For a complete job description, e-mail info@cohousingparnters.com Branch Updates The Central California Chapter is in the process of
reformation into 4 regional branches that will better serve our members by
localizing the organization and programs in the following regions: Fresno,
Tulare/Kings, Kern, and Merced. This type of restructure is
unprecedented and USGBC National is looking to us as a model. Each Green
Builder eNewsletter will include an update from these branches. Kern Branch The Kern Branch is currently in its formational
stages. We have had 3 organizational meetings and are determining
officers and board members at our next meeting to be held on June 12.
We are planning on doing a Grand Opening in September. Our goal is to
get all of the various sectors of the green building community involved in
the group and we are welcoming all members. For more information please
contact Lauren R. Lange at laurenl@quadknopf.com. Tulare/Kings Branch April marked the official Kickoff
Event for the Tulare-Kings branch with over 100 people in attendance to hear
guest speaker and CA
Secretary of Resources, Mike Chrisman, share about the
“Role of the Valley in the Future of the Environment.”
Following Secretary Chrisman’s charge to collaborate towards sustainable
practices in our local communities, May’s event hosted an overview of
the “green” workplan in place for the City of Visalia. Shawn Ogletree,
Manager of Visalia’s Natural Resource Conservation Dept., shared an
overview of the city’s history of trend-setting practices as well as
the projects currently under development. Most recently, the city has
developed the Vi-Cycle program which will recycle orphaned bikes from the
police dept. into refurbished transportation for employees in Downtown Visalia.
In May, the branch formed an Event Planning
Committee that will meet regularly to coordinate the logistics of the monthly
branch events. Thank you to Sharon Sheltzer, Erin Anderson,
Rachel Rosenberry,
and Lori Dowling
for stepping forward in contributing their time to this important task.
Moving ahead, the steering committee will be organizing a committee focused
on providing local education and training resources for our green
professional community. June will host the branch’s first BRANCH OUT
Social Event on Thursday, June 5th, 5:30-7pm at
Fugazzi’s Restaurant & Lounge in Visalia. In an effort to
develop collaborative relationships within the local community of green
professionals, the branch plans to continue creating environments to nurture
these connections on a regular basis. For more information about the Tulare-Kings Branch
or getting involved with Branch Committees, please contact us at tkinfo@usgbccc.org. |
